If you’re a medical student, you know how important it is to have a laptop you can rely on. You spend your days, weeks, and years studying away in the library, and you simply can’t afford to spend time worrying about the sub-par functionality of your laptop.
We get it, and in light of that, we’ve complied a list of what we consider the best laptops available for medical students.
Before we dive into that, I’d like to discuss the dynamic we should consider when looking for a laptop. To do that, we need to break down the needs of a medical student. What are medical students’ needs?
They have to study for extended periods. They upload and download course work. They watch medical videos, and run medical software. It’s mostly about diving into tons of material, processing it, then regurgitating it on countless exams.
So, all that being said, what will help medical students achieve this?

- Battery Life: Students need a laptop that is able to manage its power usage well. The most frustrating thing I can imagine is being at the library without a power cord, and then your laptop dies. For this purpose, we need to find a laptop that majors in power management. There are tons of features that laptops can access to save power. Most of them aren’t programmed to tap into them naturally.
- Processing: Students need a strong processor. They need to be able to run the interface without running into any major issues. It has to upload, download, print, and run programs. The processor acts as the brain of the computer, and like medical students, it needs a strong brain.
- RAM: RAM stands for random access memory. RAM allows you to run many different programs at the same time. This helps when you’re pouring through course material, and writing or organizing it at the same time. The more RAM you have the more it will allow you to organize and manipulate different programs without running the risk of a crash.
- Convenience: Medical students are notorious for having to study at odd hours and sometimes in odd places. Having a massive model would surely hinder a students’ ability to comfortably study in such places. A computer that is smaller, more light-weight, and maybe even a laptop and tablet hybrid, will allow the user to use the device in any location and still be comfortable. One of the most important things I can think of when you’re spending long days studying is having a comfortable using experience.

HP Envy x2

Introduction: The Envy x2 is a unique model. It acts as a hybrid between a laptop and a tablet. You’re able to detach the screen from the keyboard, transforming your laptop into a tablet. This is incredibly convenient when you want to study in places where having a full laptop may be uncomfortable.
Specs: The Envy x2 has a perfect platform for medical students. They come with an LED backlight, Windows operating system, an intel dual-core processor, and 64 GB of drive capacity.
I think it’s just enough of a platform to perform your day to day tasks without overloading your computer. Also, it’s not overkill. You’re not paying $2000 for a laptop that you really don’t need. It will allow you to run the programs that you need with out crashing your device and losing all your work.
Additionally, the battery life is just insane, this device will last forever. You should be able to give it a solid charge and use it all day (as long as you’re not watching Netflix all day, which you shouldn’t be doing anyways)! Although we do recommend bringing your power cord with you just in case.
Overall: This is a great device. It’s sleek, convenient, and easy to use. It will definitely meet all the demands of medical school, and it’ll have energy left over to allow you to stream videos, Netflix, music, you name it.
It’s also smaller, and it can easily be toted around campus or to residency. It’s an excellent machine and provides great performance. We definitely recommend this for medical students.

Samsung Series 9

Introduction: The Series 9 is like a razor. It’s incredibly thin. It’s light weight and small. However, it’s important not to let the small stature of this device fool you. The Series 9 provides exceptional performance and functionality. It’s powerful, sleek, and it’ll definitely get the job done with no issues.
Specs: This mini powerhouse comes relatively stacked. It’s running a 128BG SSD, it has an older CPU, but it’s still powerful, and it provides good performance overall.
They could have spent a little more effort on upgrading the hardware in the device, however. The overall specs are above-par, it basically comes down to what you’re looking to do with it specifically.
Overall: It’s hard not to like this device. It’s small, light weight, sleek, and it has a very impressive design. The only set backs are that they put much more effort into making the device look great and not enough on the processing power.
However, they didn’t skimp out on anything else, so overall, this is a great product, and it’s a great model for medical students. It’s also comfortable and small enough to bring it anywhere to study. Lastly, the battery life is well above average.
It’s a bit more expensive than other products we have reviewed, but we consider this laptop worth the price. We recommend this product.

Asus VivoBook S400 CA
Introduction: This was one of the more difficult laptops we’ve had to review. It looks great. It’s small, sleek, and light weight. The battery life is what threw us off.
For being a small, compact device, the battery life is rather unimpressive. It would get you through the day, but it would need a charge immediately when you got home. So it’s not a great choice for extra-long hours, unless you bring a power cord.
Specs: For starters, this device is packing a smaller processor. The processor is only a Core i3. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing given the small stature and relatively high performance for the device.
However, if you decide you need more, you can always add the 1.8GHz dual-core chip to up the performance a bit. It also has a touchscreen display, and a reasonable 14.1 inch screen.
The device comes with all of the add-ons: VGA, USB, HDMI, and a solid sound system.
Overall: Like we stated before, the battery life isn’t what we normally look for in a computer. However, the design is quite impressive, and it makes sense.
The computer is smaller and runs a smaller processor, but it compliments the functionality very well. It’s a great buy for right around $700.

Dell XPS 13
Introduction: The XPS is going to offer a slightly less expensive alternative. It’s offered at around $750, and we think it’s worth every penny.
It’s thin, sleek, and very handsome. It comes with an aluminum finish and minimalist construction. It has an impressive interface, and the performance might be some of the best that we have come across while making this list.
Specs: This little model has tons of RAM. It’s able to process just about anything you give it, and it can do it all at once. The screen is 13.3 inches, which is small.
However, that should assist you when you’re studying in a coffee shop or in the library. you don’t want to bring your bulky device, and you can’t bring your desktop, so the 13.3 inch screen is perfect. It truly matches its competitors, but it does it in a smaller frame.
Overall: The overall performance of this little device is exponentially better than its competitors of the same size. We’ve found that most companies choose to use outdated hardware to fit in these smaller frames.
However, Dell has been able to manufacture leaner, efficient parts to fit in their systems. This device certainly didn’t forfeit functionality or performance for size.

Final Thoughts
We are confident in these systems. Some have better features than others, and some emphasize different areas of performance more than others.
But generally, these laptops will provide excellent functionality and performance to aid in your medical school endeavors. They will provide.
They are light-weight, sleek, and thin, which makes them exceptionally comfortable when you use them to study, and they will basically run anything you will need them to.
Additionally, if you haven’t made the upgrade from a desktop or bulky laptop, now is the time. When you enter graduate school or medical school you’re going to need to be agile, flexible, and you’re simply going to need a great “side-kick” to get you through the next several (grueling) years of your life.
Thanks for reading! If you know of anything that we may have missed, or if you’re happy with the choice of the best laptops for medical students you made, let us know!
