Best 13 Inch Laptops Review 2017

Best 13 Inch Laptops

Well, that’s a great question. When we first started getting those requests from readers, we were curious about why someone might want the best 13 inch laptops.

We usually shoot for larger laptops because we like to have the large screen to watch videos and work on multiple pieces of material at once.

However, after we took a dive into this project and expanded on why so many people enjoy 13 inch laptops, we were quite surprised about how much they have to offer, and all the different ways you can use them.

Why choose a 13 inch laptop?

  • Convenience: You can take these things anywhere. They are great for taking notes in class, for bringing along to a staff meeting, or just for general office work, like writing, editing, etc. They are much better than the large laptops we are use to bringing to a coffee shop. We were quite impressed with what you can accomplish when you decide to forfeit a few inches of screen.
  • Battery Life: Because it has a smaller screen, it takes much less battery to power these things. That being said, on average these computers can last between 9-11 hours! Which is a ton when you think about your work day. You can leave it on the charger through the night, wake up, take it to work with you, and still have time on it after work to watch some Netflix or Hulu. It’s a pretty impressive battery life. This was one of the things that stood out to us when we were reviewing them. When we use larger, 17 inch monitors, we usually only get four or five hours out of them. We were incredibly impressed by the amount of life you can pull from these smaller laptops.
  • Functionality: A lot of people (including us at first), assume that if you make a computer smaller, you’re not going to have room for premium hardware. This was just simply not the case with the 13 inch laptops. Tech companies knew they didn’t want to forfeit performance to make a product smaller. They were able to make their laptops using leaner, more efficient hardware. We were actually very impressed by the engineering. Tech companies had to tap into new technology to make a smaller computer that is able to handle the processing power that we have found.

What will be the limitations of a 13 inch laptop?

  • This took a bit of thought. We were so blown away by the functionality and convenience of these little things that we didn’t take into account they might not be for everyone. The smaller screen will limit the amount of windows you can have open at once. Even if you’re able to fit them on the same screen, it will hardly be worth it since they will be so small.
  • When you watch movies, the picture will obviously be smaller. This was one of the main things that stuck out to us. I am use to having two or three people watching my screen at one. This just wasn’t feasible with the smaller screen. Although it took some getting use, we were able to enjoy it. However for people who really enjoy their screen time with movies and such, might find an issue with the smaller screen.
  • Even though we have stated these smaller computers have impressive functionality, they do tend to be sub-par compared to much larger machines. The larger machines have just been proven tried and trusted. Sometimes to fit hardware in these computer they use outdated and less effective equipment. That being said, you might not be able to load the system up with countless programs expecting them to run like they would on a larger beast.
  • Lastly, the smaller stature of the device might be uncomfortable for people to type on. It certainly takes some getting use to, and it might not work well for those who are not used to such a small laptop.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga

It’s my theory that the Yoga is called the Yoga because it’s flexible. I’m not just saying that because you’re able to bend the keyboard behind the screen to make it a tablet.

They also have a relatively strong processing system in terms of what we could expect people to use it for. No, you probably couldn’t run strong CAD software on it, and you might not be able to run several programs at the same time.

However, to run very basic home office software, this would be perfect. Also, this would be perfect for watching Netflix, Youtube, and handing off to the kids to play games.

Specs:

Admittedly, the specifications on this device aren’t incredible. However, it’s important to think of them in relation to the size of the product.

The Yoga is running a 2.0GHz processor that can be boosted up to 3.1GHz if necessary. It has 8GB of RAM, however it can not be expanded like other devices. It’s also running a 256GB hard drive size. In addition to those, it has an HD, LED, touchscreen. It also has a webcam to Skype with friends and family!

Overall:

It’s a solid little product. The Yoga is a bit more expensive than some 13 inch laptops, but if you are buying this to be a travel or family device, than it’s a great pick! The Yoga will give you a lean and efficient operating system, and it will last for years!

One of the only hang-ups that some might find is the fact that it runs Windows 8. A lot of people haven’t quite warmed up to Windows 8 yet, understandably.

Apple MacBook Air 13 inch

Apple MacBook Air 13 inch

We felt that we had to include a Mac in here. Some people don’t like them, some people are staunch Mac users. Regardless, overall, they make a strong product with an operating system that can run basically anything and quite impressively.

Regardless of your predispositions, it’s worth giving a Mac a look if you’re looking for a solid 13 inch computer, and especially if you’re going to use it for graphic design or video editing.

Specs:

The processor on this particular MacBook isn’t as impressive as we’ve seen with some other Macs, but that doesn’t mean it’s not powerful. It mostly means that most Macs are powerhouse systems.

The processor is a Intel i5-4250U, 1.30GHz, with two cores. It has 4GB of RAM, with space for 8GB of RAM. The RAM speed comes in at about 1,600RPM. In addition to all that, the graphics card is an HD 5000, giving high resolution.

It weighs about 2.6 pounds, making it one of the lightest laptops we’ve come across. It’s sleek, handsome, and extremely trendy right now (if you’re into that sort of thing).

Overall:

A Mac is a Mac, it has it’s own operating system and that’s something you’re going to have to be prepared for ahead of time. Like we said, some people love them, and some hate them.

That aside, it’s a very impressive machine, the only hangup is the price, they are expensive, and they don’t really have any competition of computers running Mac systems.

So Apple really doesn’t have any reason to lower their prices anytime soon. However, there aren’t tons of difference between their operating systems year to year.

Additionally, they provide updates several times a year. you might find it in your best interest to wait for the next update to come out then buy the previous one. That’s just a helpful hint!

Conclusion

While we understand the 13 inch laptop might not be for everyone, we think it’s an impressive device. They can usually be picked up for a lower price. They perform the basic functions that larger laptops, and they are incredibly convenient.

We would recommend these types of laptops for parents with children, writers on the go, travelers, etc. For parents, you can let the children use this to learn the basic functionality of a computer, play lite computer games, and fun learning programs.

Writers can use this when they head to a coffee shop or outdoors. In fact, I’m using one as I write this! I love to write outside and to be able to do that, I have to have a laptop that doesn’t take up much space. Also, I don’t want to get halfway into my work then lose everything because the battery died. And as we stated before, the battery life on the smaller laptops are incredibly efficient.

This would be great for travelers because they wouldn’t have to tote around their big, heavy laptop bags. they can throw it in their travel bags, and bring them out on the plane or hotel room when necessary. Also, it’s good to bring to meetings when you can’t bring your bulky laptop. They are just a small, efficient little device.

We really appreciate you taking the time to read our post! We’d like to know how you guys like the products and if there is anything you think we should add! If you can think of anything, please feel free to leave a comment below! Happy hunting!
