Whether you are a fan of sitting in your garden and enjoy a slice of nature with the visiting birds at your best bird house and cages or have birds in your home, our feathered friends can be a great source of enjoyment.
Different parts of the country, and the world, have vastly different types of them that are native to them as well as which are are available to live with you.
Whether you enjoying a little finch or a large parrot, there are lots of considerations to take account of to keep them happy.
Best bird feeders
When it comes to picking the best item for the garden visitors, a lot depends on the space you have and the kind of birds, or other visitors, you intend to feed.
There are feeders that range from free-standing miniature houses to window boxes, which can be enjoyed from the kitchen if you have no garden at all.
Bird Feeder Pole
It mounted feeders can often also be hanging feeders and come in ranges from basic to highly ornate.
These can be a feature in your garden as well as an important source of food for them.
You can find ranges that are colorfully painted and styled as lighthouses or school houses or simple, classic wooden style roofed platforms.
Hanging feeders
The useful part about hanging feeders is that you can hang them from wherever you want.
There are many ranges of separate poles that are available which can hang one or multiple feeders from them.
There are also singular hooks if you just want to hang a solo feeder and you can even string them from a sturdy tree branch.
Nevertheless, remember, depending where you locate them, you may attract more than just birds.
There are feeders that can put off any unwanted visitors, such as squirrels, if you prefer this.
There are even ones which come surrounded by a fine grid of metalwork which means only smaller birds can get through to the food.
Window-mounted
Window mounted pet feeder are a relatively new development that utilize suckers that attach to glass and are usually made from clear plastic.
Not all of them will have the confidence to approach the house close enough to use this type but those that do will give you an unprecedented close encounter if you can stay very still.
They usually comprise a seed bowl with some overhead protection to stop the rain getting it but not to seem too enclosed and frighten the birds.
Hummingbirds
Parts of the country are lucky enough to be visited by hummingbird, some of the smallest, most colorful and amazing birds in the fowl kingdom.
If you live in one of these areas and want to cater for these specialist visitors, there some custom products you can get.
Feeders
Because the hummingbird food recipe is based around nectar, the feeders that are used for them are different from the normal seed eating bird feeders.
They tend to be very brightly colored, often red and the area where the food is collected from is shaped to resemble a flower.
This gives the them the sense of familiarity they need to approach a feeder and try its contents.
Others are squat and resemble a flower flying saucer with little holes for them to collect the nectar, which will often again be decorated with flowers for authenticity.
Food
A hummingbird nectar recipe is actually a simple thing; a dry concentrate nectar and water.
For example, a 2 pound box of nectar feed mixed with water will make around 6 quarts of food for the tiny little birds.
They often have 100% natural sucrose in them which will entice the birds to return but still be a totally nature product for them.
The end product is often red in color as well as this attracts them who are used to searching for flowers as a source of their food.

Bird cages
The selection of cages on the market can be bewildering and perplexing if you have no background knowledge in the subject.
But much of the decision about which cage is best is dictated by what type of fowl or birds you want to house in it.
Cages for finches or canaries are vastly different to those for a macaw. In addition, the size you have to locate the cage in may also be a factor.
Large Parrot Cages
The biggest cages are for the biggest pets and have the biggest price tags correspondingly.
But if you invest in the largest cage possible for your parrot, he or she will thank for you it in their own way.
Parrots are highly intelligent birds which need a lot of stimulation and will need plenty of toys when in their cage, so there needs to be room for these.
In addition, they can bite through things quite easily so they need to feature strong bars that are free of toxic metals and rust resistant.
Small Parrot Cages
These are properly more parakeet cages for birds such as cockatiels and conures that are smaller than parrots but still need plenty of room and strength of bars.
Typically, these cages have large doors to allow the fowls to come out of the cage easily and plenty of room for them to have toys to keep them occupied.
Some models have top openings as well and separate playgrounds can be purchased to mount on top and allow further activity for your pet.
Vision cages
Vision are a brand of cages that merit a special mention simply because of the adaptability of their cages.
They offer a range of sizes and these can be made to be double height with an expansion pack sold separately.
This means if you buy a pair of small pets, and get the bug, you can extend the cage to an indoor aviary style without having to purchase a new one.
They usually have two smaller doors per height as well as access doors on the base to get at feeders. They are also available in different bar spaces, depending on the size of the pet you wish to home in it.
Small cages
This cage doesn’t have to be a huge, corner-dominating construction either.
If you have a pair of small finches, or a canary or two then there are some great priced cages that are large enough for a couple of small pets to occupy happily.
In fact, sometimes smaller pets can prefer a smaller home as this makes them more familiar with their environment.
Some of them can still be multi-layered and elaborate and can stand on a table or unit, while some can even hang from a hook in the ceiling if there is enough strength.

Toys
Toys sound like a bit of a frivolous thing for a bird, but if you have a larger fowl in your home such as a parakeet or parrot, toys are essential.
Any experienced keeper will tell you that two of the things that cause behavioral problems in fowls are boredom and too small a cage.
We’ve talked about cages, now let’s get into the really fun part; toys.
Wood toys
Wood toys are fantastic for them because there is little more natural to them than wood.
Also it allows the bigger birds to chew, again a natural thing. Often toys will only last so long before they are destroyed, but that’s a good sign; it means the bird has enjoyed them and they have served their purpose.
Wood toys come in ranges such as ladders with wooden rungs and ropes between, brightly colored hanging toys with a range of shaped items on them and shreddable kabob style toys.
Wood toys are designed to be climbed on, hung from, chewed and generally dismantled.
Some can incorporate food to add to the appeal but often, just being there will let your fowl be interested.
Plastic Toys
Plastic toys are a little less natural to fowls, as plastic is a man-made substance but are far more durable.
Plus if you can’t afford to keep forking out cash for new toys, then plastic ones can withstand a lot of damage.
Swings
Swings are great fun for birds and come in a variety of shapes and sizes for the different types of them.
They are often made of a variety of materials to give variety for the birds such as wood, rope and plastic.
They can stretch across the cage or being circular so the fowl can swing in it and climb around it.
Perches
When you buy a cage, it usually comes with a bird perch or two but for your bird’s health, it is important to have more than one.
Different widths of perch is also important to prevent them having joint problems with their feet in later life from only gripping one sized perches.
Pumice or Pedi perches are also a good addition to the cage.
These are covered with or made from materials that help naturally wear away a bird’s nails, reducing the need for clipping.
They will often use them for beak maintenance as well. Some types of parrots and parakeets also like perch tents, or cosy huts.
These are usually made from soft or furry material and have a flat area where the fowl can sleep or hide.
Shower perches
Shower perches are aimed at larger fowls but are exactly what they sound like; perches, which use suckers to attach to tiles or a shower, screen and allow the fowl to use a shower.
This can be vital for some types of them as the need to bath is important in feather conditioning and general health but they don’t always take to be sprayed by bottle or using a fowl bath.
Therefore, a shower perch, which they can share with you if you are game for it, can be an important option.
Food treats
Your fowl will have a recommend diet, which is typically 70% seed and pellets and 30% fresh foods.
However, on top of this, you can also purchase treats, which can supplement the diet and be used as training aids.
These treats are often aimed at particular breeds of fowls so make sure the treat is best for your fowls.
However, if you are working to train a young fowl, or add new tricks to your mature bird’s repertoire, then treats can ideal.
Rewarding good behaviour is crucial in the learning process of these intelligent creatures.
Health and nutrition
While knowing the number of your local avian vet is very important, there are a range of little conditions, which can be remedied at home.
There are also nutritional aids for them that are fussy eaters and are missing out in areas of their diet.
From basics such as cuttlebone and grit, which birds use the break up seed in their digestive system, to soluble worming products; these are all useful to have knowledge of.
From this type of area, you will often find specialist cleaning products that are safe for them.
Be careful not to use normal household cleaners that can be toxic to your pet and use only those which are guaranteed to be safe for them and animals.
