They are at the heart of the longboard trucks and make longboarding special. These little colour chunks of gear are made from urethane and by investing in new ones, can completely alter the character of the board.
The main factors in deciding which longboard bushings to use are the durometers or hardness, shapes such as cone, barrel or stepped and, to a lesser degree, the washers which can be flat or cupped. All of these factor in to the ride you will get.
Shape
Barrel types give a bit of resistance in a turn and have a good, solid centre of gravity while still allowing a good bit of rebound.
Cones, meanwhile, have the greatest turning ability but do this by having less support to the centre. If you want to never follow a straight line, then cones are the way to go.
Stepped types have the strongest centre of gravity and also the lowest turning ability, making them ideal for the stability for downhill set-ups.
Types
Like any aspect of longboarding, there is a huge amount of different brands who produce them. Making a selection based on brand is a personal choice but one option is to go for a leading brand if you are unsure which may be best.
Bones Bearings Red Bearings
Bones are one of the best-selling brands of bearings in the country. They provide a huge range of products and this is just an example. This set features eight bearings which are pre-lubricated with Speed Cream, a special racing lubricant.
They feature a single, non-contact, removable rubber shield which allows ease of cleaning as well as less friction while the high speed nylon ball retainer gives greater speed and strength.

Setup
Learning your ideal setup can be something you have already done and are just looking for a new bit of gear or is something you are learning. It is a personal choice, like all aspects of longboarding.
A lot of people chose a setup which means there is a harder bushing to the bottom and a softer bushing to the top, closer to the ground. What this means is you get greater stability and turning depth when you lean into a turn.
This makes for a very carvy ride and great fun. As well as mixing up the durometer you can also combine different shaped types to personalise your ride.
